It’s that time of the year again! All this week I will be participating in Armchair BEA, one of the most fun book blogger events of the year.
To those who are visiting my site for the first time: welcome! Allow me to introduce myself…
Have you previously participated in Armchair BEA? What brought you back for another year? If you have not previously participated, what drew you to the event? This is my second Armchair BEA. Around this time last year, I was interning at a literary agency, jealous of my coworkers in New York. Now I’m working at a children’s publisher, jealous of my coworkers in New York. The more things change the more they stay the same. I am participating once again because it was such a fun way to talk to other book lovers and be part of the conference excitement.
What are you currently reading, or what is your favorite book you have read so far in 2013? I’ve been raving about The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson since it was released! She imagines a truly stunning future where science and technology has a beautifully symbiotic relationship with tradition and art. Right this second, I’m reading Camo Girl by Kekla Magoon, but by the time this is posted I’ll probably have started Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor.
Tell us one non-book-related thing that everyone reading your blog may not know about you. I love travelling! If I weren’t in the publishing industry, I would definitely be working in travel/tourism. Tourism wasn’t my plan B; it was an equally viable option. I was looking for opportunities in both fields simultaneously. In fact, I was offered a flight attendant job the same day I was offered a publishing internship! You can probably guess which I chose.
Name your favorite blog(s) and explain why they are your favorite(s). In no particular order:
- Rich in Color : I really appreciate their commitment to reviewing books by and about people of color.
- Diversity in YA : Malinda Lo’s and Cindy Pon’s tumblr is doing a fantastic job of sparking conversations about this important topic.
- Racebending : This site is acts like a media watchdog and I love it. Consumers need to use their purchasing power to hold the entertainment accountable for their portrayals of people of color. I don’t always agree with their position but they always make me think, which is great.
- Pub Crawl : This blog is run by a lovely group of bookish ladies who share their insights on publishing, reading and writing. Their posts are always fun and informative, and they host lots of giveaways!
- Girlxoxo : This blog has everything I love: lists, food, and gorgeous graphics. I admit I need to comment more though. I tend to read the entire post in my email inbox and forget to go to the site to comment/share. Sorry, Tanya!
What literary location would you most like to visit? Why? Last year I said Hogwarts but after reading The Killing Moon by N.K. Jemisin, I’d love to visit Gujaareh. The landscapes, the architecture, the sights and smells of the market… all of it seems steeped in beauty and history. I’ve never visited Marrakesh or Istanbul but I imagine they Gujaareh to be a fantastical version of those cities.
Your sister should TOTALLY do it! It’d be a great way to explore and learn about herself while still making money! :)
Thanks so much for stopping by my post! How disappointing it is that you can’t go, again! I would be so upset haha. Well, you know what they say: third time’s a charm. Fingers crossed you get to go next year! I’ll be the one sitting back immensely jealous of you :) I read THE SUMMER PRINCE earlier this year! I liked it but it wasn’t my absolute favorite of the year. I felt like something was missing, for some reason. That ending, though?! PERFECT! I’m pretty sure I cried. So sad but so good at the same time. I think I reread the last two chapters twice before finally setting it down. I love traveling, as well! I wish I could do more of it. I’d love to go to Europe. My younger sister has absolutely no clue what she wants to do with her life and is thinking about being an international flight attendant. I keep telling her she should do it!
I bet it’s awesome working in children’s publishing! I would love to be able to travel! I’ve actually never been off the continent! Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting!
Hey Leonicka – ooh thanks for sharing those links. Racebending and Diversity in YA are 2 of my faves too – I must check out the others. And thanks for the shout out :-)
Hello! It’s nice to meet you! I’d love to work in publishing, especially for children. It sounds like so much fun! I also love to travel! My mom actually majored in Travel and Tourism, so I travel a lot with her. We just spent 6 weeks traveling through Europe last Spring. Hope you have fun this week!
