Half of the year is gone (Shocking, right? The time just flew by!) so it is time I re-evaluated my New Year’s Resolutions.
1. I’m struggling with this. The goal is to make God a priority but I “don’t have time.” A ridiculous excuse I know. Whereas I can force myself to do other chores, it does feel right to consider reading the Bible a chore, or to force myself to do it. So instead I wait til the spirit moves me. That tactic hasn’t worked well. Moving forward, I will approach this with discipline. Thirty minutes in prayer or Bible study, every night at 9pm. No exceptions or excuses.
2. Ugh. I’d forgotten about this. It was going well and then… I got busy? “Too busy to drink water?!” you say. Yes, yes indeed. I often have a bottle of water sitting on my desk and just forget to drink it. I need to develop the habit because I definitely see the benefits when I drink as little as one bottle of water each day. Does anyone have tips for this?
3. This is going very well, especially because I am surrounded by positivity from my family, friends, and coworkers. To clarify, for me honest is not the opposite of liar; it’s the opposite of fake. It is being genuine and true to who I am even if that makes me vulnerable to the critique of others. As Janelle Monáe says in her fantastic song Q.U.E.E.N. “even if it makes others uncomfortable, I will love who I am.”
4. Dance class is on the backburner until I learn to manage my time and juggle my various responsibilities. Learning a new language is more achievable this year. I bought a Portuguese book and CD to learn the basics. It was going well until I stopped practising every day. Need to get back on that horse if I want to have some grasp of the language before my trip to Brazil.
5. Plans for Brazil are going well! I’m saving steadily, doing a bit of research here and there. Right now my biggest concern is the cost of accommodations. Do y’all know of safe, inexpensive places to stay in Rio, Salvador, or São Paulo? Let me know in the comments!
6. This resolution has morphed from “or” to “and”! I recently started following BlackGirlNerds and Chaka Cumberbatch on Twitter and they totally re-inspired me to cosplay at FanExpo. I wanted to go as Astronema from Power Rangers in Space but that’s a bit ambitious for my first con. I’ll probably go with Bulma from DragonBall Z. As for playing mas at Caribana, I already registered and put a deposit down for my costume! I’m so excited :).
Bonus resolution: Better. My relationship with my brothers is much better. Or at least it is with two of them. The young one seems to be entering that I’m-so-cool teenage phase and I do not have time to put up with that mess.
And that’s that! How are your resolutions going? Do you even remember them?!
