Milestone number two of my Heritage Reads challenge is complete! I read the work of five South Asian writers and was very pleased at the variety. At first I was worried that all the books would be about female infanticide. I’d read enough novels on the topic that I was beginning to think it was the only narrative publishers thought was marketable.
Luckily that was not my experience at all! Below are the books I read to complete this portion of my challenge.
- Farzana Doctor, Six Metres of Pavement
- Shilpi Godwa, Secret Daughter
- Timeri N. Murari, The Taliban Cricket Club
- Sarwat Chadda, Ash Mistry and the Savage Garden
- Soman Chainani, The School for Good and Evil
The School for Good and Evil was definitely my favourite among these. I can’t wait to read the next book and the movie buzz is really exciting! Dare I hope for a diverse cast? Check out the book trailer below.
Who’s your favourite South Asian author? Any books you think I should read? Share your thoughts in the comments and check out my list of 10 Black Woman Writers.

I’d never heard of that book but the synopsis sounds fantastic! Thanks for the recommendation :)

I’m currently reading Chetan Bhagat’s Revolution 2020 and enjoying it so far. I don’t think I’ve read any other South Asian authors yet. I just happened to pick this book up while I was in India last month.
