I completed the “Native author” portion of my Heritage Reads challenge!
All the books I read were fantastic. As I continue this diverse reading challenge, I find myself more attuned to diversity within groups. I’m quite proud of the wide-spectrum I was able to capture in five books. The books below include 1 middle grade book, 2 YA books, and 2 Adult books. They are set in New York, Ontario, North Dakota, Washington state, and Arctic Canada. The narratives are rich and the characters are complex. I highly recommend all of them.
Margaret Pokiak-Fenton, Fatty Legs
Richard Wagamese, Indian Horse
Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian
Eric Gansworth, If I Ever Get Out of Here
Louise Erdrich, The Round House
Have you read these books? What other Native authors’ works should I read? Let me know in the comments!

Have you read Pipeston: My Life in an Indian Boarding School? I also enjoy Joseph Bruchac’s books. Skeleton Man is creeptastic.
