There are only two months left in 2013 (where did the time go?!) and I’m panicking. I’m struggling with my Heritage Reads challenge, y’all. I don’t think I’m going to make it.
Yes, I’ve had some successes. In fact I have completed several of the categories already:
But the other categories? The ones where I set the bar higher? I am failing so hard:
10 Haitian writers (1 completed)
10 Latin@ writers (4 completed)
10 African writers (4 completed)
10 Caribbean writers (5 completed)
Help me!!!
I read fairly quickly so I think I can at least hit 5 out of 10 on all the remaining categories—with your help. Please share your recommendations with me. Leave them in the comments, @ me on Twitter, leave them in my Tumblr ask box, whatever! Get them to me!
Obviously I need most help with Haitian writers. I’ve read Edwidge Danticat and Dany Laferrière. Who else should I read? I prefer to read in English but I can read in French if there are no other options.
Remember, I’m looking for authors I haven’t read this year. Multiple books by the same author only count once. (Yes, I know. This challenge is bananas.) Check out this bookshelf for everything I’ve read so far.
Make with the recommending, my friends! Please and thank you.
I’ve read all those authors before though so none of them would count for the challenge. But thanks for trying.
Yo, how have you not finished the Latino writers? Isabel Allende? Gabriel Garcia Marquez? No? And for African writers, what about Anthills of the Savannah? I loved that one.
This is not a recommendation because I have not read this book yet. I am curious about Faces in the Crowd by Valeria Luiselli but I haven’t had the time to read it. The internet tells me that the author is from Mexico so maybe this could help with the Latin@ category.
They are! I read and loved Brown Girl in the Ring and definitely want to read The Chaos when this challenge is over. THanks for the suggestion :)
Have you read anything by Nalo Hopkinson already? She’s Jamaican (living in Canada now) and her books are awesome.
