This is an excellent idea! I would love to have a classroom copy (digital or paper) for reading aloud and lending. So many book rooms are filled to the brim with fiction that reiterates problematic representation(s) and further marginalizes so many of our students, instead of engaging them and celebrating and validating their identities. Whoever lands this copy will be lucky indeed but, even better, I imagine this will help Long Hidden find its way into classrooms and libraries across the country. Hooray!

That’s awesome that you are giving them away to teachers and librarians!

Completely understandable! I assumed that was the reason behind the restriction. Having worked in schools at both levels, I’d say it’s a pretty accurate call in terms of what content is considered acceptable for teachers to showcase to their students. That said, there are definitely some students who could handle that material, and may be reading that sort of thing independently. I have a few of them in my Grade 8 classrooms, and I do give or suggest higher level reading material to those kids, often with a note home to touch base with the parents if I think some of the content might raise eyebrows. It’s a case-by-case basis thing, and an ongoing dialogue between teacher, student, and parents. But even if I wouldn’t hand out copies on the side or put it in the school library, I’m positive that there’s got to be at least one story in the anthology that I would want to share with the whole class and either have a discussion about or get reaction essays on.
TL;DR – Your restrictions are sensible, but leaving it up to individual educators is a really cool thing, and selfishly I’m glad you opened the restrictions up.
Thanks for having the giveaway. :D

I’m starting to reconsider my earlier restrictions. The high school and older rule was in place because there’s some heavy content in the anthology but maybe it’s best to leave it to the educators discretion? Anyway, thank you for entering and I wish you good luck!

Oh, this is so exciting! I’m really glad that I have the opportunity to enter despite being only a middle school teacher, not a high school teacher. I missed the Kickstarter and have been kicking myself in the pants ever since; this is exactly the sort of work I’d like to support more of, and I am very interested in sharing sections with my students, as our student body is overwhelmingly people of colour. Even if I don’t win, I’d like to do so anyway. These kids deserve to see themselves represented in media a hell of a lot more than they do now.
