This has been a slow reading year for me. So far I’ve only read 15 books. I seriously underestimated how much reading I used to do on public transit. Now that I drive, I read a lot less. To counter, that I’m looking into audiobooks.
My results
There’s no way I’ll complete my challenges this year but here’s how I’m doing so far:
Haitian writers: Roxane Gay (An Untamed State)
Latin@ writers: Sabrina Vourvoulias (“The Dance of the White Demons” in Long Hidden)
African writers: Nnedi Okorafor (Akata Witch, “It’s War” in Long Hidden); Sofia Samatar (“Ogres of East Africa” in Long Hidden);
Caribbean writers: Kemba Banton (“Jooni” in Long Hidden)
I also wanted 85% of my reading to be written by people of color. If I count Long Hidden as half I’m at 9.5 out of 15 books by POC or 63%. Not bad, but to hit my target I will need to read 22 more books this year, all by people of color. Maybe I can do it?
