I can’t believe I almost missed this opportunity! When I was at BookCampTO I ran into Tonya Liburd. Our conversation was short since I had to get ready for my panel but she mentioned another event later in September. It wasn’t until I was cleaning up some glitches and spam emails for this site that I found the invitation to moderate this discussion.
I love speculative fiction and the wide variety of stories it includes. The genre allows the imagination to go unfettered and I am always excited to explore new worlds. But sci-fi and fantasy is not known for being welcoming of change and historically marginalized groups.
Chatting with this group of professionals will be a treat. They are writers, editors, reviewers , and book sellers. I hope to draw on their expertise and insight to explore the state of Canadian SFF, and how we can work together to make it more inclusive and equitable.

The Friends of the Merril present a roundtable discussion on “Diversity in SF/F”, a wide-ranging roundtable about diversity in the Canadian and North American literary and speculative fiction field, inclusiveness, their various forms, and what works and what doesn’t.
The discussion will be moderated by Léonicka Valcius and panelists will include Charlotte Ashley, Leah Bobet, E.L. Chen, Malon Edwards, and Tonya Liburd.
The event will be held in the basement auditorium of the Lillian H. Smith Library at 239 College Street, on Saturday, Sept. 27th starting at 7 PM.
The event is free and all are welcome!
